Practice being a benevolent leader
A benevolent leader creates a psychologically safe environment. They lead by example, fostering trust and collaboration. Showing their dog how to be confident but also providing guidance to navigate life. A benevolent leader works with their dog. They make decisions with both their needs and their dogs' needs in mind. They do not rely on punishment to change behavior.
Address your own mental state and emotions. You learn how your body language, your tone of voice, your thoughts, can all influence your dog's behavior. Let's use that to our advantage!
Expose your dog to novel things and novel scenarios - this does NOT mean interacting with it. But noticing and disengaging
Desensitization and habituation create some of the strongest behavior change. Not just teaching skills, not making your dog listen to you, not coercing them with food. We talk a lot about how to setup your environment to allow for this to occur naturally.
Dog behavior and body language - you will learn how to understand your dog better, after all, your dog is learning to understand you and all of the silly words we say to them! It's fair to learn how to understand our dogs as well.
Spending your time really getting these foundations in place will help prevent and solve the vast majority of challenges you may face with your dog.
We focus on:
Rewarding offered engagement
Rewarding behaviors we like to see throughout the day
Managing and limiting unwanted behaviors
Collar give
Mat or place work
Crate/confinement training
Walking near you on leash
Hand targets
Automatic "leave it"
...and more!
You may have already taught your dog these skills in puppy class or at home. I help incrementally increase the difficulty so that these skills become "bomb-proof". So that your dog can perform them while a squirrel runs 2 feet in front of them. And without nagging or punishing. We stay patient and build upon your dogs' good choices.
